SOL: 1.1 The student will
a) count from 0 to 100 and write the corresponding numerals; and
b) group a collection of up to 100 objects into tens and ones and write the corresponding numeral to develop an understanding

Description: Students will put a puzzle together with 100 pieces. Each piece is numbered in order from 1 to 100. The students will put the puzzle together and label the groups of tens/colors on the puzzle once it is completed. This activity allows for students to see the breakdown in place value as well as identify groups of 10 up to 100.
Materials Needed:
100 piece puzzle (10 by 10)

Preparation: Buy 100 piece puzzle from the craft store. Flip the puzzle over to the blank side. Number the pieces in order from 1 to 100, as shown in the picture above. For each set of tens give the numbers different colors.
Directions:
1) Put the puzzle together starting from the upper left hand side. Work from left to right, row by row, piecing it together from 1 to 100 until you have all 100 together.
2) Next, on your Recording Sheet write down the the different colors in order for each set of 10's in the puzzle.
For Example: 1st color Blue 1-10
2nd color Green 11-20
3rd color ____ ____
3) Play "Guess the Missing Number?" with the Math Talk Cards with members of your group.
4) For differentiation put the puzzle together in reverse order starting with 100.

Summative- Students record on record sheet the colors in order from town to bottom and the set of tens each color represents. Formative- Teacher will check on the students by walking by when they get a free chance and glance at the puzzle to check for errors and for being on task.
