Description: Students will use non standard units to measure length of objects around the classroom. Students complete measuring worksheets using non standard measurement by interacting with the classroom. Students also review concepts on a youtube video.
Materials:
Box of random objects to use as tools for measuring (Tool Box)
"Measure It" worksheet
"Non-Standard Unit" worksheet.
Computer with internet access to Youtube.

Student Directions:
- Watch "Sid the Science Kid" video on non-standard units up until 2:30 time mark. (see below)
- Pull out your "Non-Standard Unit" worksheet.
- Pick a random object out of the "Tool Box." Trace the length of your object on your worksheet and label what it is.
- Go around the room with the non standard unit worksheet and estimate then measure the items listed in the room on the worksheet with your non-standard measurement tool.
- Once you have completed the worksheet, turn it in.
- Next pick a new object out of the box and get out the "Measure It" worksheet.
- Write down your measurement tool in the space provided. Label the object, estimate its length, then measure with your measuring tool.
- Do this for 5 different objects.
- Turn in worksheets when finished.
Differentiation: Measure the length of your non-standard tool with a ruler. Record how long the non-standard tool is in inches. Next, go back and remeasure everything from the "Non-Standard Measurement" worksheet with the ruler in inches and record your findings.
Assessment: Formative-Non Standard Unit Worksheet and check with teacher if available to look over answers.
